The 12U Major Travel Team participated in the Greater Niagara Baseball Association Pee Wee Select OBA tournament this past July. The boys went undefeated in round robin play with a 16-0 win against Niagara Falls, a 14-0 win against Thornhill – which was a combined no-hitter by Nolan Hammond and Owen Kandilas, and an 11-0 win against Newmarket – another combined no-hitter by Jack Smith and Nolan Boyle.
During Sunday’s playoff elimination round, the team started the day with a 29-1 win against Thornhill in the semi finals. This game featured the first OBA career home runs for Jack Smith and Jack Hines.
The championship game was a hard fought battle against the Mississauga Majors. Down 5-0 after the first inning, the boys fought back hard as a Jack Hines double scored Ian Manning to win the game in thrilling walk off fashion with a 10-9 win to take the championship. This was a total team effort where the entire batting lineup contributed from top to bottom.
The team is proud of the fact they took home the hardware, but equally proud of the defensive effort put forth throughout the entire weekend. To go into the championship game with a 70-1 runs for and against differential is a testament to all the hard work the boys put in on their defense week in and week out at practice.
Great job boys! Way to represent the Diamondbacks program. On to our last little league tournaments of our careers next weekend in Oakville and early September in Dundas.
The weekend proved to be bittersweet as it will be Andrew Kuntz’ last game in a Diamondbacks uniform. The Kuntz family (including Andrew – 12U D-Backs HP team, brother Cappy – 10U Minor D-Backs and sister Ashlyn – 14U Blizzard girls softball) is moving to Belgium in the coming weeks. The entire D-Backs and Blizzard family wish you all the best in your exciting journey.
